Kalvarija, or the Plague Cemetery, is a hill in Zemun and the name of the neighborhood in which it resides. It contains a park with a 128-step stairway that features the names of famous people born in Zemun including artists, poets, musicians, and athletes.
The stairs are known as Kalvarice and are painted green and blue—the color of the Zemun’s coat of arms. Residents of Zemun were inspired by similar stairs in Brazil and wanted to have something unique in their city as well. In 2016, the stairs were renovated.
