About

Red Dog, was the name given to a kelpie cross dog who was well known across the northern section of the state of Western Australia.

Born in 1971, he was believed to be born in the mining town of Paraburdoo, and over the years, was given many other names including Bluey, Tally Ho, Pilbara Wanderer, and Dog of the Northwest. He gained a reputation for his wandering nature across the Pilbara Region, giving him iconic status. It is thought that he was known to most by the name Red Dog, due to the red dirt which covers most of the landscape.

Red Dog was later owned by a bus driver who allowed the canine to accompany him on the bus around the towns of Dampier, Karratha, and the surrounding areas. After this owner died, the dog traveled long distances alone and accompanied many members of the wider community on large journeys around the state.

In November 1979, Red Dog sadly died from poisoning and his legacy has carried with two statues that pay tribute to his life in Dampier and Paraburdoo. He is buried in an unmarked grave somewhere between Roeburn and Cossack.
