About

Situated atop the north western end of Rhossili Downs, the Rhossili Down radar station was built in 1942, as part of 'Chain Home Low', a network of World War II radar stations covering the Bristol Channel. Operated by the Army and Royal Air Force with the aim of detecting low flying aircraft at 500 feet (150 m), early warning could then be sent to Swansea upon discovering incoming German bombers.

The entire structure was decommissioned in 1945 at the war's conclusion. It was subsequently demolished post-war, with the southern access road and the concrete base all that remain of the radar station.

Rid of most of the harsh concrete structure, the stunning views of Rhossili Bay and across to Worm's Head headland take precedence. Despite this, the remains of the Rhossili Down radar station continue to stare out into the Bristol Channel, making it abundantly clear why this site was chosen to defend the Gower Peninsula and South Wales coastline.
