About
Situated in Enterprise, Alabama, this boll weevil statue pays homage to the humble insect that ruined the city's cotton crop in 1915, as well as the city’s separate monument to the boll weevil.
In the early 20th century, the insect posed such a threat to the area’s primary crop, cotton, that farmers diversified their plantings, leading to greater prosperity. The original monument went up in 1919.
Found throughout the city. there are dozens of variations of these newer weevil statues, stylized to connect to local businesses, installed as part of a community art project. (You can even download coloring sheets for the kids.)
This particular statue pays homage to McDonald’s, the commercial fast-food giant, as well as supplying plenty of nightmare fuel.
