About
Rydal Cave sits on the northern side of Loughrigg Fell, above Rydal Water's southern shore. Most would assume the cave to be a natural formation, but it is actually a disused slate quarry that dates back to the 18th century.
Excavated to provide roofing slate and long since abandoned, the cavern is mostly flooded, with a shallow pool stretching from outside the cave towards its rear. Strangely, there are small fish in the pool, and it is not known how they got there.
A patch of ground towards the back of the cavern can be reached via stepping stones, while echoes reverberate around the chamber. The cave's jagged walls frame the view outwards over the trees, across to Heron Pike fell on the other side of Rydal Water. On calmer days, this splendid scene is vividly reflected on the surface of the pool.
Sitting between Ambleside and Grasmere, Rydal Cave is an easy and rewarding walk from either town. Despite being a man-made structure in an area of incredible natural beauty, it remains a popular spot for hikers and sightseers.
