About
Tucked away in the heart of San Diego’s bustling Marina District, Kansas City Barbeque might look like just another casual eatery serving up smoky ribs and cold beers. But for movie buffs, this unassuming spot holds a special place in cinematic history—it’s home to the original piano featured in the iconic 1986 film Top Gun.
The beloved bar became a star itself after being used as a filming location for several memorable scenes in the film. Most famously, it’s where Goose (played by Anthony Edwards) and Maverick (Tom Cruise) belt out a raucous rendition of "Great Balls of Fire." The battered upright piano, still proudly displayed in the bar, carries decades of wear and tear, but its keys remain a magnet for Top Gun fans who can’t resist reenacting the scene.
Kansas City Barbeque narrowly escaped destruction in a 2008 fire, which devastated much of the bar but left the piano remarkably intact. Today, the restored bar operates as both a functioning restaurant and a shrine to the cult classic. The walls are adorned with Top Gun memorabilia, including signed posters, photos, and props donated by the filmmakers.
While visiting, you can enjoy a plate of their famous BBQ while soaking in the nostalgia. If you're brave enough, take a turn at the keys and channel your inner Maverick—or Goose.
